Kate Courtney grew up at the base of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, the birthplace of mountain biking. She won the 2018 UCI XCO World Championship while still a student at Stanford, becoming the first American woman to take the elite title since 2001. She followed with the 2019 World Cup Overall title and claimed the 2025 Marathon World Championship. In 2025, she left the Scott-SRAM team after six years to launch She Sends Racing, a privateer program tied to her She Sends Foundation nonprofit, which connects and inspires women and girls through mountain biking.
