Zach Miller was born in Kenya to missionary parents and primarily raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He ran cross-country and track at Rochester Institute of Technology while studying electrical engineering. After college, he took a job in the print shop on the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, training on a treadmill, the ship's stairwells, and at ports of call. After winning the JFK 50 Mile in 2013 with the third-fastest time in course history, he turned professional. In 2015, he became the first American male to win the CCC (101K) at UTMB in Chamonix. He won The North Face 50 in California in both 2015 and 2016, plus the Madeira Island Ultra Trail. For five years, Miller was the resident caretaker at Barr Camp, a backcountry cabin halfway up Pikes Peak in Colorado, living and training at altitude on Barr Trail. He is one of the few professional distance runners who shuns GPS tracking devices, preferring to run by feel.
