Lynn Hill completed the first free ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in September 1993, a 3,000-foot route at 5.14a/b that had been considered impossible to free. In 1994, she returned to free The Nose in a single day (23 hours). From 1986 to 1992, she won over 30 international competitions, including five Rock Master titles at Arco. She was the first woman to redpoint 5.14a with Masse Critique (1990) and the first to onsight 5.13b with Simon in Germany (1992). Her autobiography Climbing Free was published in 2002.
