Kelly Galloup

Angler
American·b. ~1960
Known for:
Streamer fishing innovator and owner of The Slide Inn on the Madison River in Montana. Developed the Modern Streamer Method and designed dozens of influential fly patterns including the Dungeon, Sex Dungeon, and Boogieman.
Sponsored by: Hardy, Skwala, Airflo, Cortland

Kelly Galloup has spent the last three decades rewriting the playbook on streamer fishing for trout. Based on the Madison River in Montana, where he owns and operates The Slide Inn lodge and guide service, Galloup developed a system for targeting large, predatory brown trout with articulated streamers fished on sinking lines and aggressive retrieves. His fly patterns, particularly the Dungeon and Sex Dungeon, have become staples in fly shops across the country. He is the author of "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout" and has produced instructional DVDs that codified techniques like the strip-set and the downstream swing that are now standard practice. Galloup's approach changed how a generation of anglers thinks about big-trout fishing, moving the focus from matching the hatch to triggering predatory strikes.

Kelly Galloup's Gear List(5)

Top Shelf / Rock Bottom / Dungeon 30

Cortland

Product description

Three lines designed with Kelly Galloup for big-river streamer fishing: the Top Shelf (floating, 37-foot head, 170-255 gr), Rock Bottom (40-ft Type 6 sinking head, 6-7.5 ips), and Dungeon 30 (30-ft Type 6 sinking head, 230-330 gr). Rock Bottom's longer head keeps flies in the zone through full retrieves; the Dungeon 30's shorter head loads faster for bankside casting. All use Cortland's Reinforced Tungsten Technology on sinking heads with braided nylon cores.

Dungeon (Fly Pattern)

Galloup's

Product description

Articulated streamer designed by Kelly Galloup, tied on size 2 front and size 4 rear hooks with a spun deer hair head, lead dumbbell eyes, marabou, rubber legs, and webby hackle. The deer hair head displaces water and creates a throbbing action on the retrieve, while the two-hook articulated shank adds length and movement. One of the foundational modern articulated streamer patterns, primarily fished for large predatory trout in big-water river systems.
