François D'Haene was born in France and initially pursued a career as a physiotherapist, balancing clinical work with competitive trail running for eight years. He eventually transitioned to managing his partner's family vineyard in Beaujolais while competing at the highest level of ultrarunning. D'Haene won UTMB in 2012, 2014, 2017 (fastest time on the modified course that year), and 2021, making him the most decorated men's UTMB champion in history. His racing style is characterized by meticulous preparation and pacing. He uses GPS watches to follow detailed race plans through aid stations and technical sections. D'Haene also holds the John Muir Trail FKT and has won other major races including the Grand Raid de la Reunion. His dual identity as a winemaker and world-class athlete has made him a distinctive figure in the sport.
