Clare Gallagher grew up in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, and studied coral reef ecology at Princeton University. After graduating, she taught English in Thailand and started Earthraging, an environmental stewardship program for the fishing village where she lived. She won the 2016 Leadville Trail 100 in her first attempt at the 100-mile distance, finishing with the second-fastest women's time in course history. In 2017, she won the CCC at UTMB with a course record in the elite 100K race around Mont Blanc. She won Western States 100 in 2019 immediately after returning from a two-week advocacy trip to Alaska with Patagonia to oppose arctic drilling. Gallagher serves as a Global Sports Activist for Patagonia, using her platform to advocate for public lands protection and climate change awareness.
